Objectives:
To ensure compliance of radiation emitting devices and radiological institutions to national and international standards aiming at protection of workers, patients, and public from radiation hazards.
Responsibilities:
The main activities and responsibilities of the Executive Management for Radiation Protection and Safety are listed per department as follows:
Radiation Protection and Safety Department:
- Protect patients, public and end users from radiation hazards.
- Develop radiation protection and safety programs.
- Control the risk resulting from the use of radiation emitting devices.
- Ensure that radiological institutions and devices are registered and licensed by SFDA.
- Establish databases for:
- National radiological institutions;
- Radiation emitting devices;
- Radiation Safety Officers (RSO);
- National dose registry.
- Conduct national surveys concerning radiation protection and safety.
- Give recommendations and advices for radiological institutions and related bodies
regarding control of radiation
Radiological Devices Surveillance Department:- The Executive Management for Radiation Protection and Safety in cooperation with other medical devices sector Managements will share the responsibility of:
- Monitoring the use of radiation emitting devices;
- Reviewing relevant documents of radiological institutions;
- Following-up with the radiological institutions to ensure their compliance with SFDA requirements.
- Ensure that radiological institutions apply recognized Quality System Programs for radiation protection and safety.
- Review the quality of periodic maintenance programs of radiation emitting devices at the radiological institutions and ensure that all relevant documents which include radioactive materials management are saved and kept for easy access in case of emergency.
