Saudi Food & Drug Authority Warns the Public about fake green tea product containing banned slimming pharmaceutical products

2010-04-06

In line with its role of tracking and control of the quality and efficiency of drugs and cosmetic products ; SFDA Inspection Teams have discovered that some products of "American Leptin pharmaceutical Limited" company are sold in the local market, namely: Sliming Green Tea and sliming Green Coffee 800 which are claimed to be efficient for slimming.
Upon analysis of these products, it is found that they have been faked by addition of Sibutramin, a banned drug, formerly licensed for slimming, but SFDA cancelled its registration and banned its sales later, after studies has revealed that they are unsafe and hazardous to the health and have dangerous side-effects i.e. propensity to heart and arteries disease. Besides, they do not meet the alleged benefits.
Whereas the act of the marketing company is considered a commercial fraud and a violation to the pharmaceutical organizations regulations, issued by the Royal Decree No. M/31 dated 1/6/1425H, SFDA recommended the recall of these products and banning their sale, in addition to taking the necessary disciplinary action against those entities which sell or market these products
Availing this event, SFDA would like to advice citizens and residents not to believe in such misleading alleges regarding the efficiency of this green tea product in slimming and warns that such products are faked with slimming drugs that cause addiction e.g amphetamines and destroy heart valves in addition to laxity products such as "Senna" and others.
